Communications Assistant / Content Creator at Laptuote Foundation

I worked as a Communications Assistant and Content Creator at Laptuote Foundation from January 15 to December 19, 2024. Laptuote Foundation is a non-profit workshop operator and social enterprise focused on building sustainable well-being and solving social issues through training, rehabilitation, education, and employment. The foundation operates throughout the South Karelia region and serves approximately 500 clients annually. My main office was located in Lappeenranta, where I enthusiastically worked as part of the Laptuote team. At the beginning of my role, from January to the end of May, I had a colleague with whom I shared the responsibilities of content creation and communication assistance.


Diverse Role

My duties included overall marketing and communication for Laptuote, with a particular focus on planning and executing social media content. I created content for all Laptuote's social media channels: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. I was responsible for Laptuote's own channels, as well as the Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok accounts of Goodwill Lappeenranta and Goodwill Joutseno (which closed in August 2024). I also managed the social media accounts for the SOTE workshop's Instagram and Facebook pages. I aimed to develop and create brand-aligned content for each platform. For Laptuote, I focused on creating casual, professional, and fresh content that informed clearly and engagingly about the foundation's services and activities. For the Goodwill stores, I ensured the content aligned with Goodwill Finland’s brand. When creating content for the Goodwill stores, I made sure to present their ideology and services in a relevant and audience-appropriate way. For the SOTE workshop’s social media, I focused on creating warm, human-centered, and relaxed content. The SOTE workshop offers work activities for people with disabilities, aiming to support labor market inclusion and enhance well-being and life management. When creating content for the SOTE workshop, I particularly focused on highlighting the joyful and optimistic daily life of the clients, known as "kettupajalaisten," and their work activities.


Creativity and Freedom in Content Creation

I had a great deal of freedom when it came to brainstorming, planning, and creating content, which allowed my creativity to flourish. My goal was to ensure that regular posts, including those about coaching, projects, and workshops, were published on social media. Many team members at Laptuote asked me to create content for various purposes, which helped me improve my teamwork and project management skills. While employees’ requests and suggestions sometimes made advance planning and content consistency more challenging, the collaboration also taught me flexibility and adaptation. This teamwork ensured that I created up-to-date, informative, and engaging content that appealed to different audiences on various social media platforms.


Content Creation Stages

My job included photography, writing video scripts, recording voiceovers for videos, filming, editing, photo manipulation, and writing captions. I also designed the visual branding for Laptuote, the SOTE workshop, and Goodwill for social media and other marketing materials. I believe these materials will continue to work well in the future as a new employee takes over my role. I used various software tools for this work, including Canva, CapCut, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Office programs (PowerPoint, Word, OneNote). These tools helped me develop not only my graphic design skills but also my customer service and communication abilities.


Sole Responsibility for Multiple Channels

Given that from May onwards, I was primarily responsible for content creation across all platforms alongside my other duties, I’m particularly proud of the informative and brand-aligned content I was able to produce for Laptuote’s diverse activities. I made sure to consider employees' requests and suggestions, aiming to create cohesive and engaging content that resonated with our audience.


Diverse Tasks and Challenges

My work at Laptuote Foundation was not limited to social media content creation but also involved various tasks related to communication, marketing, and visual design. I created a photo and video bank for the organization, which I believe will help in the consistent use of brand-aligned materials in future projects. Additionally, I updated and developed the Laptuote website, ensuring it was up-to-date and clear. I also designed print materials, such as brochures and newspaper ads, to support marketing and communication efforts. Moreover, I participated in the planning of Laptuote's May and winter events, gaining valuable experience in event marketing and organizing.

The diversity of tasks allowed me to develop many different skills. I learned to organize and prioritize my work more efficiently, as my responsibilities covered a broad range of areas. This taught me important project management skills, as I had to coordinate several projects simultaneously. I also had the opportunity to develop my communication and collaboration skills by working both internally with the Laptuote team and with external partners. Creating visual designs and developing the overall look strengthened my graphic design abilities and taught me how important it is to consider the target audience and brand guidelines when creating materials.


Valuable Experience and Collaboration

This year-long fixed-term position through the Paikka Auki project at Laptuote Foundation was my first official job, and it provided me with valuable experience in a wide range of communication and marketing tasks. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with external partners and integrate that into Laptuote's internal communications. In particular, in social media marketing, I worked with Kela’s NUOTTI coaching program, which Laptuote offers, as well as with Laptuote's collaboration with Saimaan Virta on the Osaamisen Polut project.
